THE FUTURE IS ELECTRIC: PART 1
Introduction
Electric vehicles have emerged as the leading contender in the sustainable transportation space. Electric vehicles come in different forms, including ICE (Internal Combustion Engine), HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle), PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), and BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle), each with its unique characteristics and benefits.
ICE vehicles have been the traditional form of transportation for decades, relying on gasoline, diesel, or other types of fuel to power their engines. However, they have come under scrutiny for their negative impact on the environment, with emissions that contribute to air pollution and climate change. As they have more moving parts to maintain, routine maintenance may cost more.
HEVs combine an ICE engine with an electric motor and battery, resulting in better fuel efficiency and lower emissions. PHEVs operate similarly to HEVs, but with a larger battery that can be charged by plugging in, providing longer all-electric range. As both have many of the same mechanical parts as ICE vehicles, routine maintenance is about the same.
BEVs are entirely electric, relying on batteries to power their electric motors. They produce no tailpipe emissions, making them the most environmentally friendly option. As battery technology continues to improve, the range and performance of BEVs continue to increase, making them a practical option for many drivers. As BEVs contain fewer mechanical parts as the first three varieties, routine maintenance may cost less.
As the world becomes more conscious of the impact of transportation on the environment, ICE, HEV, PHEV, and BEV vehicles will continue to play a significant role in shaping the future of mobility. Over the next few posts, we will explore the benefits and challenges of each of these modes of transportation to provide a current “State of the Industry” and where the industry is heading. In addition, we will provide examples of some of these vehicles that are currently available or coming soon to a Principle Auto Group dealership near you.
